Otters are so proficient
at capturing the fish they live on, that they have lots of
time left over for play. And they seem to play with reckless
abandon, sliding down steep canyons in deep snow, swimming
under the ice in Yellowstone Lake. They submerge us into the
lake to find strange underwater spires only recently discovered
by man. Other creatures sometimes survive bitter winter seasons
by stealing fish from the otter. Actually, they're pretty good
at defending themselves, and this program catches some astonishing
action between them, coyotes, eagles,
beaver, even an occasional grizzly bear.
Seasons
of the Otter has
now been completed and released by Bob Landis and myself. We
had hoped to have it out last year, but now it is finished.
If you have an interest in otters, Yellowstone,
wildlife or nature in general, we believe this film will have
been worth waiting for.
Bob has captured
some of the most intimate otters behavior and it was all
shot in the wild! None of this photography has been
done with controlled animals as is sometimes done in nature
films. These wild creatures of Yellowstone are motivated entirely
and exclusively by their own inner compulsions. Well,... the
exception is when they are influenced by the acts of other
animals.
Other animals such
as coyotes. Coyotes steal fish from otters. This turns out
to be a contest that has gone on for eons, and you may be surprised
to learn that coyotes, and other creatures, can literally be
dependent on otters in order to survive the coldest months
of winter.
Because otters can
catch fish in Yellowstone Lake, even in the winter, some other
mammals and birds sometimes steal enough of the otter's catch
to get them through lean times.
We also have some
remarkable footage shot deep in Yellowstone Lake, where we
see mysterious thermal spires not
previously known to exist on the lake bottom. This geologic
activity is just beginning to be recognized and studied in
Yellowstone Lake, and the otters take us there for a fascinating
look as part of this film.
Otters are synonymous with
humor. A bald eagle boldly confronts an otter, seeming to demand
that the otter hand over its fish! A coyote catches an otter
diving into a hole in the ice and pulls him out by the tail.
Otter pups play and slide on the ice in an explosively comic
way. Geese, expecting to land in water, find themselves sliding
on new ice.
There are four short
additional programs as a bonus on this disc,... interviews
with otter experts, and a 12-minute piece on how the underwater
photography was done with a remote underwater vehicle.
This is a fun film.
We hope you like it.

My girlfriend and I loved this video. The shots of otters are amazing, especially when they are belly-surfing through the snow. This is a great video for anyone that likes the outdoors, but an especially great video for anyone that likes otters.

We are very fond of otters in the first place, so we were keen to watch this show (on SCN). We were not disappointed - a fun documentary, elegantly shot and pleasantly narrated. And the star actors were fabulous!

My wife has a "thing" about otters. I have been searching for documetaries for a long time, and was happy to stumble across this little gem. The cinematography is excellent, the facts interesting, and the narration top-notch. If you love otters, this is a must-have for your collection!

I only had a short time to view this program, but I was taken by the Otter. No offense to the other animals here, but the Otter sure enjoys its life. IT SHOWS. They are all about fun. I enjoyed this program. My children are back in WI, and I called them right after the program to tell them about the program. I really enjoyed watching this show. The Otter is my favorite 4-legged friend. Second only to my dogs.
