A robed horseman leads his camels across the desert sand, framed
by the great pyramids of Giza, beginning
5,000 years of human history in Egypt:
of Pharaohs and Fables.
As the rising sun slowly rolls up the side of a pyramid to its
apex, we see imagesof Pharaohs. The seven greatest Pharaohs
in history; Zozer, Cheops, Chephren, Hatshetsup, Ankenaten, Tutenkhamon
and Ramses II.
In Cairo, the Egyptian Museum reveals
its ancient artifacts, statues, human and animal mummies as
well as King Tut's treasures. Today's
Cairo means life on the modern streets, traditional markets, the
Citadel, Muslim cemeteries, mausoleums, minarets and joining Muslims
for prayer inside a mosque.
In Memphis, the first city of united
upper and lower Egypt is the ancient god Ptah's temple, and giant
beds of stone where animals were mummified and buried with all
the pomp accorded a Pharaoh.
The great stepped pyramidthe
oldest stone structure on earth sits on the Succara Plain. Also
here are underground tombs, including
the resting places of the sacred Apis bull gods.
At Giza are the most famous of all the pyramids, and the Great
Sphinx. We go inside Chephren's pyramid.
At a Pharaonic village, ancient days are authentically re-enacted showing
farming, boat-building, fishing and papyrus-making.
A train ride to Aswan, travels through
tiny villages along the Nile to experience its markets, seafront
and famous Old Cataract Hotel with authentic belly-dancing.
A Nubian friend takes
us to his village, the Aswan High Dam, the unfinished obelisk, a
felucca ride around Elephantine Island and the Temple of
Phial, home of the Egyptian goddess Isis.
The giant colossi of Abu Simbal introduce the
temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertiri.
A cruise down the Nile stops at the
temples of Kom Oombo with its mummified crocodiles and Edfu, great
temple of the hawk-god Horus.
The temples of Karnak and Luxor were the sites of the ancient
festival of Opet. We explore Luxor today
with its exotic markets and streets at night and return to Karnak to
view mysterious temples and watch craftsmen make alabaster treasures.
In the Valley of the Kings, we visit
the mortuary temples of Hatshetsup and Ramses II and the eternal
resting places of Pharaohs. We also relive
the discovery of King Tutenkhamon's treasures in 1922, and
meet a boy who helped with the excavation ...today an old man .
A 300-mile desert trip to the Oases of Kharga
and Dhakla goes past the great sand sea, isolated desert
villages and ancient petroglyphs.
Dendera, the temple of the goddess Hathor and Abydos, the mortuary Temple
of Seti I, and legendary city of Tel El Amarna, the city
of Akhenaten, the first Pharaoh in history to believe in one
god.
At the Fayoum Oasis, the struggle
for sustenance by its people, the beauty of the land, brick-making,
farming, and city life continues.
In Alexandria, the town created by Alexander the Great, are underground
catacombs, but first we tour this resort city's harbors
and Roman ruins.
On a deserted beach, we recall the monumental battle of El
Alemaine in World War II, view tanks and armaments still
here, and visit the cemeteries of those who gave their lives
in that historic battle.
At the Suez Canal, giant tankers
glide past to the Sinai Peninsula, home to Christian and Judean
history, and the Bedouin, living in
tents, keeping their camels and their ancient customs.
Our
goal: Sunrise at Mt. Sinai, where
God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, and the 5th-Century monastery
of St. Catherine, where Greek monks guard the sacred burning
bush of the bible.
Our return to Cairo takes us to its
fascinating camel market, and the celebration of a modern Egyptian
Muslim wedding.
