Tom Sterling embarked on a nine-year
search for every albino in as many kinds of animals as he could
find.
"It began with a call from a friend in northern Ontario.
He asked if I would like to photograph a white moose.
That white moose started a nine-year odyssey to the outermost reaches
of North America."
Filmmaker Tom Sterling takes us into the forests of northern Ontario,
the swamps of Louisiana. the autumnal forests of New England, the
mountains of British Columbia and many places in between on a quest
to document and film that one anomaly that exists, but rarely is
seen, in almost every animal group.
Tom spent five years and over
a 100 days of observation from a blind in order to film the white
moose of Canada ...his most precious trophy on film. But there
are numerous and unexpected trophies of animals you'd never believe
as only white.
Some albino animals are instantly recognized even without their
normal color, such as an alligator or a catfish. But it is astonishing
how many animals can't be recognized when they are all white. You'll
never guess the racoon without his familiar "bandits mask" across
the eyes, or a common house sparrow, completely exotic and unidentifiable
without his color .
Among the featured albinos are:
moose, porcupine, alligator, bison, boxer dog, wallaby, peacock,
whitetail deer, raccoon, opossum, woodchuck, robin, house sparrow,
retail hawk, turkey vulture, gray squirrel, blue jay, pheasant,
salamander, red fox, catfish, garpike, turtle, rattlesnake, barred
owl, elk and the piebald deer.
We also see how these albino animals have to cope differently
with their environment than normal critters, and how they're sometime
ostracized by their species and at other times accepted as completely
normal animals.
A TOTAL DEFICIENCY OF COLORING MATTER IN SKIN, HAIR AND EYES PRODUCING
AN ALMOST UNRECOGNIZABLE CREATURE FROM THE NORM. THE ALBINO.
